Mercedes release Ocon to Renault for Abu Dhabi test

Toto Wolff wasn't prepared to risk Esteban Ocon's career by putting him alongside Lewis Hamilton in 2020.

Mercedes will be allowing Esteban Ocon to join up with Renault early so he can take part in the post-season Abu Dhabi test with the Enstone team.

The Frenchman was hoping his current team, where he will conduct his reserve driver duties for one last time in the season finale, would let him join up with his new team early so he can start racking up the miles in the Renault car.

That wish has been granted and Ocon has now been confirmed to be joining Renault on December 2. He will then drive for them in the post-season test on the following Tuesday and Wednesday at the Yas Marina circuit.

Ocon may have signed a two-year deal with Renault, but Mercedes will still remain as his management company.
