Nico Hulkenberg has revealed his post-driving career could entail moving into a “management role”.

With the exception of 2011 and 2021, the 35-year-old has contested at least one Formula 1 race every season since 2010.

In the last few years, the German has had to transition to becoming a reserve driver, fulfilling that role for Racing Point, now renamed Aston Martin, since 2020 and competing at five grands prix weekends during that time.

There may yet be a full-time return to the grid for ‘The Hulk’, who is being linked with Haas, but at this stage it would be only natural if his thoughts had turned to what he will do when his racing career is over.

Although he did not specify what sort of management would appeal to him, whether in a team capacity or looking after the interests of a driver, Hulkenberg suggested that is one path he may choose to pursue.

“Obviously it’s TBC where the short-term future will head for me, if I will be racing or not next year and the next couple of years I’d say,” said Hulkenberg in Aston Martin’s ‘At The Bar’ series, presented by Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%.

“Long term, I think it’s definitely interesting to transition into a management role. It’s definitely something I look up, and who knows where it will take me in the future.”

There is already one management string to Hulkenberg’s bow in that he launched his own electric scooter team, 27X, for the inaugural season of the eSkootr Championship.

“It’s a new chapter for me, a different kind of involvement,” explained Hulkenberg.

“I’m not driving, I’m a team owner, I have my own team there which is exciting and something totally new for me – something very new and hasn’t been seen before.

“It’s something I started and I follow and invest also some time in.”

Although Hulkenberg has 181 starts to his name and one pole position but no victories or podium finishes, he did win the GP2 Series and the Le Mans 24 Hours on his only appearance, for Porsche in 2015.

Asked to name his best accomplishment, in career or life, he replied: “I think the biggest achievement was to make it into Formula 1 and to make a lasting career, 10 years in Formula 1 when it was quite difficult for drivers with talent but not with financial support to stay in the sport.

“I think I would point that out or name as my biggest achievement.

“And outside of the sport, even though it’s pretty new and fresh, is my baby daughter. She’s nine months old and that’s been a success.”
