‘Outside world’ to blame for Max’s troubles
Jos Verstappen believes the “outside world” made a problem when drawing too much attention to Max Verstappen’s 2018 troubles.
Verstappen was involved in six incidents in the first six race weekends of the 2018 season, with his crash in Monaco qualifying amongst the more high-profile error.
The Dutchman’s driving style came under intense scrutiny, but the criticism began to subside after a very strong second half to the campaign.
But Max’s father, Jos, believes that difficult start was made into a bigger deal than what it was by the “outside world”.
“I discuss everything with Max, including during his tough time,” Jos Verstappen told his son’s official website.
“I don’t think there was anything wrong. It was really the outside world that made a problem out of things.
“Maybe the conversation after Monaco was hard but if you see how he picked it up from there and how he starts this year, it’s perfect.”
Ahead of the 2019 campaign, Jos Verstappen said that he still plans to show up at a majority of his son’s races, but will not be telling him what to do.
“It’ll be the same as before,” he said.
“I don’t have to be here all the time to tell him what to do; he knows that better than me.
“But it’s the small things. I don’t tell him what to do, but I talk to him about what I see. That’s more than enough.”
