It is believed that Renault are set to announce the arrival of Pat Fry, just a few months after the British engineer left McLaren.
Fry joined McLaren as the engineering director on a temporary basis before James Key joined from Toro Rosso, and was largely credited for the success of the team’s 2019 car.
Motorsportweek.com reports that the 55-year-old’s exact role at Renault is unknown, but that he will be working closely with Technical Director Nick Chester to help the team achieve their goal of closing the gap to the top three teams.
Before joining McLaren, Fry was Technical Director at Ferrari for four years before being replaced by James Allison and subsequently being a consultant to Manor Racing for a season.
The hiring of Fry follows an announcement from Renault yesterday that they are to revamp their entire aerodynamics department at the end of the season.
Given that their customer team McLaren is doing much better than them this year, they have identified the necessity to focus on their chassis and aerodynamics rather than the power unit itself, which has often been their supposed weakness.
Renault are currently P5 in the Constructors’ Championship</a and, with Racing Point and Toro Rosso just nine points behind, they will be focusing on holding on to that spot for the final three races rather than trying to take P4 from McLaren.
