Sergio Perez: New Force India deal

Sergio Perez’s seat with Force India for the 2019 season has now been officially confirmed ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

The Mexican has long been expected to stay with the team for a sixth season, although there were rumours of him returning to McLaren or joining Haas when ‘silly season’ reached fever pitch.

But the wait for confirmation is finally over, with Force India confirming that Perez’s seat was secured for another campaign.

“I am very happy to announce my future and I’m really motivated for 2019,” said Perez.

“Force India has been my home since 2014 and has allowed me to grow as a driver and show my skills on track. We have achieved so much in the last five seasons but I think the best is yet to come.

“The new investment the team is enjoying fills me with confidence and I am really excited about the future.”

Perez has had a far from straightforward season at Force India as he was the one that had to initiate the administration process to keep the team alive via a fresh takeover and new ownership.

And the stability that he gives the team was pinpointed by the Force India hierarchy.

“Sergio is one of the most talented and consistent drivers on the Formula 1 grid,” added team principal Otmar Szafnauer.

“He gives us valuable stability going forward and is a huge asset to the team. As we begin an exciting new chapter in the life of this team, we are delighted that Sergio will race with us going forward.”

Perez’s contract extension means Ocon’s unfortunate exit from Force India is closer to being confirmed, with Lance Stroll set to take the Frenchman’s spot and join his father, Lawrence, who now owns the team.

Williams have already replaced Stroll with Mercedes reserve driver and F2 World Champion in-waiting, George Russell.
