Sergio Perez: Finances tight at Force India

Linked to a buy-out by Lawrence Stroll, Sergio Perez admits Force India’s financial situation is “critical”.

Although the team fought back to fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship at the British Grand Prix, it is a team punching far beyond their financial weight.

It is well known that the Silverstone outfit has money problems with recent reports suggesting Lance Stroll’s father, Lawrence, stepping in as their saviour.

While some suggest he is on the verge of buying Force India, other reports claim it is a done deal.

Either way, at least until there is confirmation of some sort, Perez says his team are in trouble.

“At the moment the situation is critical,” the Mexican driver told Reuters.

“There’s no secret that the financial problems have held the team back quite a bit.

“When you look at the results, because Formula One is just about the results, we are fifth in the Constructors’ Championship and you cannot imagine the financial issues we’ve had so far.

“It just shows the potential this team has.”

However, Perez concedes he may not be at Force India long-term to see how it all plays out.

“Obviously we all want to be driving in the top two teams, Ferrari or Mercedes, so obviously it’s very unlikely that I’ll have an opportunity there for the next years.

“So you have to look at where is the best option for your future, where you can show your talent.

“I’ve been for the last two years the best of the rest (outside the top three teams) in the Drivers’ Championship.

“I just want to see what’s possible for next year, which teams have a vacancy, and then decide.”
