Sergio Perez wants SportPesa Racing Point to be the fourth-fastest team in Formula 1 by the end of 2019.

The team are a new entry to the grid this season after Lawrence Stroll’s consortium bought the bankrupt Force India team in 2018 and rebranded them to Racing Point.

The “legacy” of Force India’s collapse made it difficult for SportPesa Racing Point to bring upgrades through in the first half of 2019, but now that is changing and the new-found financial stability has paid off.

After stating their aim to score points at every race after the 2019 summer break, the team are so far delivering with Perez claiming P6 at Spa and then P7 the week after at Monza.

And, although the team are P7 in the Constructors’ Championship, the target for Perez is to finish the season as the fastest midfield team.

“We’ve definitely made some progress, and we are making [progress], so it’s definitely encouraging to have the targets for the rest of the year,” Perez is quoted by Crash.net.

“I want to make sure we finish the season with the fourth-best car on the grid, regularly, across different circuits. That will be a good finish to the season.”

McLaren lead the way in what is a packed midfield, and Perez admits a 0.3s gain over their rivals is needed to achieve his aims by the end of 2019.

“I think a step of three-tenths on top of what we have is what we need to be regularly the fourth-fastest team out there,” Perez admitted.

“It’s very close, but three-tenths considering no-one improves is a big step.”
