Pierre Gasly and Daniil Kvyat are Franz Tost’s best driver line-up with the AlphaTauri team boss hailing their “fantastic natural speed”.

This season Gasly and Kvyat will again line up on the grid for AlphaTauri, formerly known as Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Both drivers have had mixed careers in Formula 1.

Signed to Toro Rosso, promoted to Red Bull, demoted back to Toro Rosso and in Kvyat’s case even dropped completely before being brought back into the fold a year later.

Asked if his 2020 line-up was AlphaTauri’s best pairing, he told “Yes, I would underline this, because as we know if we analyse both drivers Daniil Kvyat has a fantastic natural speed.

“He won races, he won championships, just remember back in GP3.

“And Pierre Gasly as well, he won races, he won the GP2 championship and he drove last year in the second half of the season some fantastic races.

“Just remember his second place in Sao Paolo when he managed to keep Hamilton behind him one lap.”

Both drivers made it onto the podium last season.

Kvyat was third at a wet and chaotic German Grand Prix, the team’s first podium since Sebastian Vettel’s Italian GP win back in 2008, while Gasly was second in Brazil.

It what proved to a manic final 10 laps, the former Red Bull driver impressed as he worked his way onto the podium and even kept World Champion Lewis Hamilton at bay.

Toro Rosso, as the team was known in 2019, finished the season in sixth place with 85 points.

It was the team’s best finish since 2008’s P6.

Tost was happy with the team’s first of two pre-season tests, confident the team is looking good ahead of the new season.

“We had three very fruitful test days here in Barcelona, completing more than 100 laps every day – 384 in total – and learned a lot about the car, but we still have to work on the final set-up,” he said.

“However, I think we are going in the right direction which is a good sign.

“In general, I must say that Scuderia AlphaTauri seems to be in a good position for the upcoming year.”
