Pierre Gasly says that he’s better prepared to race coming out of the quarantine, due to the time he had to train.
The AlphaTauri driver decided to spend the first two months of the lockdown period in Dubai before recently returning home to France.
In Dubai, he was with his coach and had a personal gym, as well as plenty of free time. He spent this time training and says he’s in the best shape of his life because of it.
“I stayed in Dubai for about two months, which was a really tough period for everyone, having to stay inside in lockdown with not very much to do,” he said in an interview after announcing his new sponsorship deal with sunglasses company Hawkers.
“In that sense, I was pretty lucky to be able to stay there and we managed to have a personal gym, so I could train every single day for two months and really focus on the physical preparation, which was great.
“I improved a lot and for sure I am in my best shape ever. I’m really happy about it and we still have a couple more weeks of training before the season starts.”
During the season, drivers have to limit their training in order to save their strength for races. Not having to do this was something Gasly says he enjoyed and made the most of.
“I really enjoyed pushing myself even more, because, with no races, there was no need to save my strength for the race, so I really tried to push myself a lot,” he added.
“We did a lot of cardio, running, intervals at quite high intensity; Also, some long runs, a bit of cycling and a lot of gym sessions to get stronger and build up more strength… basically getting more fit in general.
“I improved my flexibility as well because once you are inside the car this is also an important factor. I was already prepared before the season kick-off in Australia, but I think I have improved even more in every area.”
Gasly’s new sponsorship agreement will see him wear and promote Hawkers sunglasses in the paddock on each race weekend this season.
