SportPesa Racing Point principal Otmar Szafnauer hopes the team’s planned summer upgrade can “help improve the car forever”.
The team have had a strong start to life since being taken over by the consortium headed by Lawrence Stroll in August – rebranded from Force India to SportPesa Racing Point for 2019, they currently occupy P5 in the Constructors’ Championship just behind McLaren.
Under the Force India name resources were limited, but the new financial backing has allowed the team to increase its development and fast-track updates onto the car – a front aero and suspension package was introduced at Barcelona, but they struggled to get the best out of it.
However, the team is currently in the process of redesigning its aero philosophy after announcing their move to Mercedes’ Brackley windtunnel from their former base at Toyota’s Cologne facility.
SportPesa Racing Point plan to release their next “big” upgrade in time for the German Grand Prix in July, one which Szafnauer hopes can “improve the car forever”.
“This is a big one,” he told Autosport. “And the aerodynamic philosophy changes as well, so it’s a big thing.
“It’s not a risk, no [making such a change in philosophy]. I think other people are already doing what we’re trying to do.
“A lot of things will change – it’s a big mass flow-rate of air change. Directionally it’s the right thing, and it’s something that will also continue to help improve the car forever.”
Sergio Perez was pleased with the RP19 during Thursday’s free practice sessions ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, but he expressed his concern over the car being almost at its full potential.
“That’s the worrying thing, because the car doesn’t feel that bad, the balance is not bad,” Perez, who finished FP2 in P15, told Autosport.
“It’s just fine-tuning, and you know in fine-tuning it’s very hard to find half a second. But we’ll see what we are able to extract the best from the car.
“We don’t have a particular issue at the moment, unless we find it tonight [Thursday].
“The bad thing is that the car, the balance is not bad, we don’t have a lot of lap time to find in terms of balance.”
