Kimi Raikkonen believes Alfa Romeo had more pace at the Hungarian Grand Prix than McLaren but couldn’t get the overtake done.

Carlos Sainz claimed P5 for McLaren, with Raikkonen crossing the line P7 to earn a fourth points finish in the last five races.

The Finn went into the weekend with little expectation and so was surprised with the pace Alfa had in the race, so much so that he believed they were faster than his former employer.

“I don’t know really because I didn’t expect much,” said Raikkonen when asked if he was happy with P7.

“Obviously I had no idea where we were going to end up after Friday, but actually the car was behaving very well.

“I thought we had more speed than McLaren at the beginning, but then after the pit stop we knew that it was impossible to overtake and I had to save the tyres for the end.

“We lost one position in the pit stop, we gained one, so maybe the only thing we could have done better was stop a lap earlier but that’s how it goes.”
