Red Bull won’t ‘roll over’ for Mercedes in 2021

Red Bull boss Christian Horner has said the team are not going to give up in their aim of knocking Mercedes off their perch.

Mercedes have been untouchable during the turbo hybrid era, winning every available piece of silverware since 2014.

They made it a record seven consecutive Constructors’ Championships in a row with a 1-2 finish at Imola and only a Mercedes driver can now lift the 2020 Drivers’ title with Max Verstappen officially out of the picture following his unfortunate DNF.

With Ferrari falling down the pecking order, it’s been left to Red Bull to try and stop the Mercedes domination and, with pretty stable regulations to come in 2021, it looks set to be another arduous task to try and stop the Silver Arrows from earning even more title glory.

But Red Bull are not losing motivation as a result and, with a Honda-powered engine for one final season, they are determined to push Mercedes all the way.

“We have obviously got to find more performance aerodynamically,” Horner told Channel 4.

“We are limited on what we can do mechanically. There are some subtle changes [for 2021] and I think from what the teams have tried they are bigger than we thought in terms of the aero reductions for next year’s tyres.

“So you can’t give up. Mercedes have hit a sweet spot and come up with an incredible car this year but we are not just going to roll over and give it [the titles] to them next year.

“Anything is possible if you keep working hard at it. Mercedes have demonstrated that and we demonstrated it before that.

“Our challenge is to take that next step. Days like Imola are frustrating but we will have more days in the sun I’m sure.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has also said they see Red Bull as a threat and are “worried” about them, especially with Max Verstappen within their ranks.
