A free agent at the end of this year, Sebastian Vettel could be on his way to McLaren in a “fantastic PR” move for the team.
Vettel confirmed on Tuesday that his days at Ferrari are numbered as he will be leaving the team at the end of this year.
The four-time World Champion said: “My relationship with Scuderia Ferrari will finish at the end of 2020.
“In order to get the best possible results in this sport, it’s vital for all parties to work in perfect harmony.
“The team and I have realised that there is no longer a common desire to stay together beyond the end of this season.
“Financial matters have played no part in this joint decision. That’s not the way I think when it comes to making certain choices and it never will be.”
Vettel will now take some time to look at his options but with salary not a factor, McLaren could be in the running.
Not for the first time the Woking team has been linked to Vettel in what could be a straight swap for Carlos Sainz.
Vettel knows McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl, having worked with the German during his days at BMW Sauber.
A source close to McLaren told thejudge13: “Seidl knows Vettel well, they knew each other back in the days of BMW Sauber.
“If Sebastian owes it to someone, he will certainly think of Andreas.
“And that would be a fantastic PR opportunity for McLaren-Mercedes.”
Next season McLaren will be teaming up with Mercedes, swapping to German power after two years with Renault.
The move, McLaren hopes, could be the final piece in the puzzle needed to make the team a regular on the podium.
