Sebastian Vettel must either commit to Ferrari or swap seats with Lewis Hamilton, those, according to Ralf Schumacher, are his only options.
Vettel has yet to decide whether he will be staying with Ferrari next season, or for that matter whether he will be racing in Formula 1 at all.
The German was reportedly offered a one-year deal by the Scuderia for 2021 but is said to have labelled it a ‘joke’ and turned it down.
He has been linked to a move to McLaren while Mercedes could also be in option.
Vettel hinted as recently as a month ago that he was open to changing teams and, more to the point, following in Michael Schumacher’s footsteps by swapping from red to silver.
“I think there is even an example of a German who went somewhere else after Ferrari, if I remember correctly,” he told Bild.
Former driver Ralf Schumacher has all but ruled out Vettel heading to McLaren, saying he feels his compatriot has just two options on the table.
One is Ferrari, the other is Hamilton’s Mercedes race seat.
“If he commits himself to Ferrari, then that’s the way it will be,” Schumacher told Sport Bild.
“Switching back from Ferrari to another team is always difficult in Formula 1. Ferrari has a special relationship with its drivers.
“If he feels the support of the team, the subject of money should simply play a secondary role for the time being.
“If he achieves his goals this year, he can easily ask for more money afterwards.
“Otherwise, the only option for Sebastian would be to swap cockpits with Lewis Hamilton.
“Then he would get a car that he knows he can become World Champion in right away.”
