‘Easy guy Perez doing all his homework’

Having been with his previous team for seven years, Christian Horner acknowledges Sergio Perez has a steep learning curve to adjust to Red Bull’s procedures.

He is, however, happy with the way the Mexican driver is going about the task at hand.

Red Bull announced in December that Perez would be joining the team for the 2021 season, signing a one-year deal to partner Max Verstappen.

While earlier in the season it had appeared as if his Formula 1 career was over, dropped by Aston Martin in favour of signing Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull handed him a much-welcome lifeline.

One, though, that came at the expense of Alex Albon.

Time is of the essence for Perez to adjust to life with his new team as this year pre-season testing has been reduced to just three days, one-and-a-half per driver.

As such, Red Bull opted to give Perez a run in last year’s RB15 before putting in his first laps in this year’s RB16B.

Horner says so far he has been very impressed with the 31-year-old’s attitude.

“I think for Checo, after having driven for one team for so long, inevitably, there will be quite a lot of differences even just in procedure, in the way we operate,” the team boss told Motorsport.com.

“So any mileage we’ve been able to give him is of huge value as he gets to know his new engineering team, how the mechanics work, how our meetings work, and what’s required of him as a Red Bull driver.

“I think he’s settling in very well. Obviously, he’s been around for a while and he’s a popular member in the paddock. And I think you can see why.

“He’s an easy guy to get along with. He’s doing all his homework, he’s been working hard over the winter and he’s really grabbing this opportunity with both hands.”

Last season, Perez claimed his first ever Formula 1 race win, taking the chequered flag at the Sakhir Grand Prix.
