Former McLaren mechanic Marc Priestley expects Sergio Perez to join Haas and thinks it could be confirmed as soon as next week.
The Mexican driver is currently without a seat for next season after Racing Point decided to replace him with Sebastian Vettel.
He has stated he’s keen to remain in Formula 1, and many feel that the most likely place for him is at Haas. In fact, there are reports that suggest he has already signed a contract with the American team.
Priestley stated on his YouTube channel that he thinks this is the case and expects it to be confirmed sooner rather than later.
“Yes, we expect that to be the case,” Priestley said in response to a comment stating that Perez future will be announced next week.
“Most likely, it’s going to be Haas for Checo. There are two options really: Alfa Romeo, but I think that’s likely to be Kimi [Raikkonen] and Mick Schumacher; At Haas though, there are potentially two seats, and I think that Checo could well end up there.”
With Alex Albon often struggling, there have also been rumours that Perez will replace the Thai driver at Red Bull next season.
Despite the fact that the team hasn’t signed someone outside of their own young driver program since 2008, Priestley thinks that both the Mexican and Nico Hulkenberg could end up there.
“The other seat that’s still a possibility is a Red Bull seat,” he added.
“If you look outside the Red Bull program, looking at [Nico] Hulkenberg and looking at Checo, both are not bad options if you don’t feel like the Red Bull program has got someone ready to step up and do the job that needs to be done alongside Max Verstappen.
“So there’s still a very real possibility that Checo or Hulkenberg could end up inside that Red Bull program as a wildcard, maybe just for a season or two.
“We should get some answers from Checo maybe next week. That’s the word on the street.”
