Domenicali convinced Hamilton to call Verstappen
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali reportedly pushed Lewis Hamilton to call Max Verstappen after their Silverstone collision.
The first major flashpoint between the duo in their title battle occurred on the opening lap of the British Grand Prix, with a collision at Copse sending Verstappen crashing out of the race.
From there, the fall-out was rather intense, with a furious Red Bull team venting their disgust over Hamilton’s actions, while Verstappen himself felt disrespected by Hamilton’s post-race celebrations after taking victory.
But the Hungarian Grand Prix served to cool tensions between the pair, with Verstappen himself snapping at a reporter still probing for any potential concerns either had over more wheel-to-wheel racing.
All parties have since confirmed Verstappen and Hamilton spoke after the incident, but Hamilton it appears was pushed to be the instigator.
According to Dutch commentator Olav Mol, it was Domenicali who stepped in to convince Hamilton to call the Verstappens.
“He (Domenicali) has been involved in this since the moment of the crash,” Mol told Ziggo Sport.
“He kept calling Jos. He was on the phone every five or six hours. He kept asking Jos if Hamilton had called, and they kept telling him it hadn’t happened.
“Then Domenicali said he would call Hamilton with the message that he should call the Verstappens.”

Formula 1 signed off for the summer break with a chaotic classic in Hungary where Alpine’s Esteban Ocon emerged victorious – another race where Verstappen clashed with a Mercedes, this time that of Valtteri Bottas who triggered a melee at the first corner.
Sergio Perez in the other Red Bull was also a casualty of that lap one crash and with Hamilton recovering from a strategy error to finish P2, he replaced Verstappen as the leader in the Drivers’ Championship while Mercedes also regained control of the Constructors’ standings.
And so, with a pair of triple-headers to come after the summer shutdown, Mol said there are many tired people in the paddock who are in need of this rest.
“You can notice many people are ready for a rest,” he confirmed.
“After the summer break there is another triple-header, one week of rest, then another triple-header outside of Europe.”
