Ex-McLaren racer Stoffel Vandoorne has been given the role of Mercedes reserve driver for the 2020 campaign.

Vandoorne was replaced at McLaren by Lando Norris after the 2018 season and made the switch to Formula E where he races for Mercedes’ team alongside 2019 F2 Champion Nyck de Vries.

He will share duties on race weekends with fellow ex-F1 driver Esteban Gutierrez who has been part of the Mercedes programme for the past two seasons.

Esteban Ocon had served as the Silver Arrows’ full-time test driver last year but will return to the grid in 2020 after signing with Renault.

The team revealed their 2020 challenger, the W11, at a shakedown event on Friday at Silverstone. Valtteri Bottas was given the chance to try out his new “weapon” during the morning, while Lewis Hamilton took over driving duties in the afternoon.

Pre-season testing for the new season gets underway at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Wednesday February 19, and unlike last year, Mercedes will not bring two different cars for each week of testing.
