Aston Martin’s nightmare weekend in Melbourne may have Sebastian Vettel losing his “patience” with the team and questioning whether this is what he wants.

That’s according to former F1 driver turned commentator Timo Glock.

Back on the grid in Melbourne having missed the first two rounds of the championship due to Covid, Vettel had a weekend to forget. But then again so did his team-mate Lance Stroll.

Between the two of them they crashed four times and were both penalised for various infringements – Vettel his scooter ride after FP1 and speeding in the pit lane, and Stroll for his qualifying collision.

In fact Glock reckons the only people at Aston Martin who deserve any praise after Melbourne were the hard-working mechanics.

“What can we say about that?” he wrote in his latest Sky Germany column. “Sebastian Vettel’s racing team experienced an absolute worst-case weekend in every respect.

“The only ones to point out are the mechanics, who knelt in to get the cars back on track, which worked.

“But both Vettel and team-mate Lance Stroll had a completely uneven weekend with numerous mistakes.”

The German says Stroll’s qualifying crash with Nicholas Latifi was the worst of the lot.

Stroll overtook Latifi for track position with the Williams driver then passing him up the inside of the bend only for Stroll to turn in on his compatriot, causing a collision that saw him hit with a three-place grid penalty.

Glock said of the accident that “Stroll’s in qualifying, when he clears Latifi, just can’t happen. He has to think about that.”

Another person who now has to do some serious thinking is new Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack.

Only in the job this year, the 50-year-old needs to find a way to turn the team’s fortunes around.

With Alex Albon in the points for Williams in Melbourne, Aston Martin is the only team yet to score a single point this season.

Glock said: “This is not an easy situation for the new team boss Mike Krack. He comes to Aston Martin and has so many different construction sites. It’s going to be a tough road for the whole team.”

Krack also has to find a way to keep Vettel invested with constant speculation about the four-time World Champion’s future.

“I can imagine that Sebastian Vettel will lose his patience at some point because he himself knows how long it takes to get out of such a low,” Glock concluded.

“Therefore, the question arises whether he still wants to do that to himself.

“Now you have to wait for the next races and see how he can motivate himself and what he then decides for his future.”
