Don’t expect Toto Wolff to swap Mercedes for Aston Martin, at least not before the end of the 2021 season says Mika Hakkinen.
Wolff is out of contract with Mercedes at the end of this year with rumours linking the motorsport boss to a move to Aston Martin.
Not only is Wolff good friends with Lawrence Stroll, who recently bought into the British car maker, but he himself has also recently acquired a few shares in the company.
And with Stroll putting the Aston Martin name on the grid in 2021 by rebranding his Racing Point team, rumours claim Wolff could be soon be moving further down the pit lane.
The Austrian has however denied this several times.
“Total bullsh*t!” he told Austrian paper Osterreich when asked about the speculation.
“The stocks are very low right now and the new product line is great.
“It is a personal financial investment in an automobile manufacturer that has nothing to do with Formula 1.”
But while Hakkinen reckons Wolff won’t be considering a move to Aston Martin at this time, given the current situation that Formula 1 finds itself in, he hasn’t ruled out the Austrian making the swap in 2022.
“I got into Formula 1 almost 30 years ago,” he told t-online.de. “Rumours of drivers, teams or engineers have always been around.
“I have known Toto for a long time, I appreciate him not only as a person, but also for his services to Mercedes and the whole Formula 1.
“He is a great ambassador for our sport.
“I can very well imagine that he is in discussion with a new team like Aston Martin.
“But given the current situation with regard to the 2020 and 2021 seasons, I believe that he is busy enough at Mercedes.”
