Fernando Alonso has been confirmed as part of Toyota’s four-driver line-up for the Dakar Rally next January.
As reported by Motorsport.com, Alonso will compete in the event, based in Saudi Arabia, on January 5-17 in a Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa-prepared Hilux 4×4 – Marc Coma, five-time winner of the event in the motorbike class, will be his navigator.
Alonso will partner Nasser Al-Attiyah, Giniel de Villiers and Bernhard ten Brinke as Toyota expand to a four-car factory line-up,.
The two-time World Champion began preparing for the Dakar assault back in August – he made his debut in the category in South Africa’s Lichtenburg 400 a month later where he finished 16th.
The Spaniard finished 26th in Morocco earlier this month after crashing into a ditch from a top-ten position. He’d also set top-10 times in three of the five stages in the traditional Dakar warm-up.
Alonso continues his Dakar preparations with a two-day test in Tarragona from 25-26 October, before competing in the Ula Neom Rally, part of the Saudi Desert Rally Championship, from 4-9 November, driving a newly-built Hilux.
Toyota are also weighing up whether or not to organise a final test in Abu Dhabi in December.
