He came up short again against team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the fight for the title this year, but Valtteri Bottas is confident he is edging closer.

Hamilton secured his sixth Drivers’ crown on Sunday, but the good news for Bottas is he is assured of second place in the standings, which will be his best finish to date in F1.

It has been a great comeback from the Finn during the latter stages of this campaign after he seemed to lose his way just before the summer break.

And although he missed out on the title again, Bottas feels the gap to his Mercedes team-mate is closing and expects the fight to be close again in 2020.

“First of all huge congratulations to Lewis – six Championships is an impressive achievement. He had a strong season and he deserves the title, he was better overall.

“Lewis is a tough opponent, he has very few weaknesses, makes almost no mistakes and drives very consistently.

“But I’ve been gaining some good momentum, so I’m looking forward to another close fight with him next year.”
