Sebastian Vettel risks losing his protected status at Ferrari after yet another error cost him dearly at the British GP, so says former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
Teaming up Vettel with Charles Leclerc this season, Ferrari made it clear from the get-go that Vettel is their number one man.
That they said meant Leclerc, only in his second season in F1, was free to make mistakes while learning his craft.
Instead, though, it has been Vettel who has made the mistakes.
While Leclerc kept it clean during his battle against Max Verstappen at the British GP, Vettel made a mistake – not his first of this season – and ploughed into the back of the Red Bull.
Leclerc finished on the podium while Vettel was P16 with the team-mates now separated by just three points in the championship.
Former F1 racer Schumacher reckons these mistakes could cost Vettel his number one status.
“Two young drivers are duelling but one of the older ones in Sebastian cannot manage it,” GPFans reports Schumacher as having told Sky Deutschland.
“That should not be happening to him.
“Sebastian has to be careful not to lose his number one status.
“He almost has and Charles is not making it easy for him.”
