Wehrlein crosses Mercedes/Ferrari divide

Date published: January 8 2019

Pascal Wehrlein, formerly on the books at Mercedes, will join Ferrari as a development driver for the 2019 season.

Wehrlein spent two seasons in Formula 1, beginning his rookie campaign with Manor in 2016 before heading to Sauber for the 2017 season.

But, with Sauber opting for Marcus Ericsson and Charles Leclerc in 2018, Wehrlein found himself on the sidelines and was eventually released from his Mercedes contract at the end of the year.

Ferrari, meanwhile, are in need of new development drivers after losing both Daniil Kvyat and Antonio Giovinazzi to full-time driving roles, and have snapped up Wehrlein after he essentially became a free agent.

Wehrlein will combine the Ferrari role with his Formula E drive at Mahindra, where he will be making his debut at the upcoming grand prix in Marrakesh.

It is believed the 24-year-old visited Ferrari’s HQ at Maranello on Monday, while the Scuderia remain keen on adding a second development driver into the mix.

Ferrari are yet to provide official confirmation on Wehrlein’s arrival.
