Verstappen: We have more to come

Max Verstappen says Red Bull still have something left in the tank for qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix, adding he is “feeling positive” after a solid Friday.

The Dutchman was fastest in FP1 and then settled for second place behind Lewis Hamilton in FP2, but he was just 0.184s off the Mercedes’ driver’s best time.

“It was a good day. We are competitive and the car was working really well in both practice sessions,” Verstappen said.

“I had traffic in the last sector on my qualifying simulation and I only improved by two tenths compared to the hard tyre run, which means we have more to come.

“I think we look strong on long and short runs but of course, Lewis also looks very fast.

“It’s not an easy track to understand and it is very bumpy out there but with a competitive car it’s really enjoyable to drive.

“There are always things that can be improved which we will look at now and this race is 95 percent about qualifying and I’m feeling positive so far.”

Red Bull team-mate Alex Albon is getting his fist taste as an F1 driver at the Marina Bay Circuit and he it wasn’t the best of debuts as he crashed into the barriers in FP1.

Things improved in the afternoon as he was down in fifth.

“It’s not an easy track,” he told RaceFans. “Very technical, so I need to get used to it. There’s so many corners and everything like that. In terms of overheating: yourself, tyres, brakes. It’s going to be a difficult one on Sunday, I’m sure.”

He added: “It’s so technical that you make one mistake and the lap is over. So no mistakes, clean driving but at the same time, you’ve got to push the walls.”
