Although Lotus secured a podium in 2015, Jean Alesi says there is "no chance" of that happening in 2016 as the team returns to Renault ownership.
2015 ended with confirmation that Renault have finally concluded their purchase of Lotus, the team they had earlier sold to Genii Capital.
But while F1 legend Alesi has welcomed Renault's return to a works team, he has written off any chance of them securing a podium this season.
"This is very important for [France], because we used to have in the past grands prix," he told Motorsport.com.
"And now with the comeback of Renault, not only for the next year but for the long-term future, it will be very helpful for France."
As for a possible podium for either Pastor Maldonado or Jolyon Palmer, the Frenchman stated: "No chance in 2016.
"They have to re-create the team and it is going to be a transitional period."
