Fernando Alonso has been singing the praises of Jenson Button, saying the Brit, who is set to start his 300th grand prix in Sepang, is probably “the best” team-mate he’s ever had.
Alonso and Button teamed up last season at McLaren as the Woking team revived their partnership with Honda.
It has been a trying time with both drivers scrapping just to score points, never mind finish on the podium.
This year will most likely be their last season together as team-mates, at least on the track, as Button is taking up an ambassadorial role in 2017 with his race-seat going to Stoffel Vandoorne.
But before he steps aside Button will join an elite group of three drivers, the other two being Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher, to reach the 300 mark.
Speaking about his team-mate, Alonso told reports in Malaysia: “For me, he’s probably the best team-mate I’ve had.
“He is very fast. He is very competitive inside the car, always and in all conditions, but outside the car as well he is a very nice guy, a true gentleman, and also very committed to the sport.
“He’s always running in the simulator, working with the team, spending whatever time is necessary with the engineers, being 100 per cent physically all year long.
“As a package I think he’s the best.”
