Alonso: It was scary

Heading into his pit box too hot due to a lack of brakes, only quick reflexes saved Fernando Alonso's mechanics in Sunday's Spanish GP.

The double World Champion was forced to retire from his home grand prix when his MP4-30 lost it brakes.

Shortly after his first pit stop of the afternoon, Alonso ran off the track at Turn 1 and it was apparent his brakes were failing.

However, the issue grew steadily worse as he made his way back to the pits and he overshot the box with only quick reflexes saving his mechanics from injury.

"It was scary," he told the BBC.

"I had no brakes for the whole in-lap and and for the pit stop it was even less.

"I'm disappointed for the retirement but the only thing we can do now is investigate and come back stronger for Monaco."

The Spaniard remains positive about McLaren's progress.

"It is coming," he said. "We are a long way off so we need to make a lot of steps.

"We need to make double steps because everyone else is improving.

"But we are recovering well."
