Alonso saga rumbles on at Monza

Fernando Alonso has a “very good feeling” with McLaren, so says his manager Flavio Briatore – he just wants to see how the engine situation plays out.

The double World Champions’s future remains uncertain with reports linking him to a move away from McLaren, perhaps to Williams, and others saying he could be off to IndyCars.

Alonso’s decision is dependent on McLaren’s engine partner for next season with the Woking team believed to be eyeing a switch to Renault power.

On a weekend when he was hit with a 35-place grid penalty for changing engine components, Alonso said: “I hope that we will find that competitive package for next year – that would make my decision much easier.”

His manager Briatore has reiterated this, saying that once McLaren have made a decision regarding their engines, Alonso will make one on his future.

“We have a very good feeling with McLaren,” Briatore told Sky F1. “Let’s see what they do with their engines.

“There’s no timeframe. We need to know something quite quickly and then we will we decide.”

Pressed as to how “quickly” he wants it resolved, he replied: “I hope it’s an hour. The sooner we know, the better for everybody.”
