Clocking an unofficial time of 358kph around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday, Fernando Alonso says the “respect of the speed” is “just pure adrenaline.”
The Formula 1 double World Champion covered 110 laps of the hallowed Speedway as he prepares for his Indianapolis 500 debut.
As part of the preparations Alonso had to pass a rookie orientation test, which he did so on Wednesday, clearing the way for him to qualify for the 101st running of the Indy 500 later this month.
“It was a very good feeling to be able to feel the respect of the place, the respect of the car, the respect of the speed,” he said.
“It is something that for every racing driver is just pure adrenaline.
“It was a good day.”
The Spaniard, though, conceded that it wasn’t easy adapting to the new conditions.
Asked if he felt comfortable in the No. 29 car, he replied: “Not at all.
“I was getting up to speed. The circuit looks so narrow when you’re at that speed. It’s very, very narrow. I was trying different lines.
“I was not as comfortable as I will be in a couple of weeks.”
