Audi technical director Jorg Zander is set to return to Formula 1 as he joins Sauber in 2017.

The German will leave his Audi role at the end of this season after the manufacturer’s withdrawal from the World Endurance Championship.

It is a return to Formula 1 for Zander who previously worked with Toyota, BAR, Williams, Honda, Brawn GP and even Sauber when it was running as BMW Sauber.

He left F1 in 2009 to start his own engineering company and almost returned with HRT before joining Audi Sport.

Zander’s recruitment in the latest in Sauber’s bid to bolster their technical department having already signed Xevi Pujolar, Max Verstappen’s former engineer at Toro Rosso, and strategist Ruth Buscombe, whose worked with Ferrari and Haas.
