McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh leapt to Lewis Hamilton’s defence after the under-fire Brit’s latest big-race mishap.

A fortnight after his rough-and-tumble Monaco outing Hamilton’s attempt to pass team-mate Jenson Button in Canada ended against a wall in the start-finish straight.

The incident has caught the attention of the stewards who will investigate it after the race.

However, Whitmarsh insists: “There’s no issue.

“Jenson didn’t know he was there and Lewis was trying to make good progress. They both see it the same way. Other people may criticise, but this is the way we run our race team.

“Lewis is an extraordinary driver. He’s got to go out there and drive as he drives best. He’s always going to go for it, and it would be wrong of us to try to defuse that passion.”
