Lagging behind Lewis Hamilton in Friday’s second practice in Melbourne, Valtteri Bottas admits it is a “big gap” but not one that has his worried.
On Friday the Finn took on Hamilton in a competitive situation for the first time as Mercedes team-mates.
While Hamilton was quickest on the day, a 1:23.620, Bottas was third fastest and almost six-tenths of a second off the pace.
However, the former Williams driver is confident he will find time overnight.
“Yeah, it is a big gap,” Bottas said. “But I’m not worried yet.
“It’s only Friday practice and my first proper practice in a race weekend with the team.
“I am allowing myself time to work on things, and I’m sure for tomorrow I can make a step forward and continue from there.
“The shorter runs, the qualifying pace is an area for me tonight to work on. I was quite pleased with the longer runs, the pace seemed okay for us as a team.
“We’ll work hard tonight and I am sure we’ll find some lap time.”
