Cherries striker Josh King was the first to try his luck when he tested the Toon stopper from a tight angle before then beating Fabricio Coloccini with a great turn of pace, only to find Elliot at his best again.

It was completely against the run of play that Steve McClaren's men took the lead when lovely interplay between Aleksandar Mitrovic and Georginio Wijnaldum found Perez running through on goal and he finished clinically.

Bournemouth responded well to the setback, however, with the dangerous King seeing a header tipped wide by Elliot, while Adam Smith then saw a piledriver from the edge of the box fly inches over the bar.

Elliot was Newcastle's hero again just before the interval when he kept out Dan Gosling's towering far-post header after an excellent ball in by Matt Ritchie.

And he was at it again within 40 seconds of the re-start when Smith's cross from the right was met by a powerful header from Ritchie but Elliot acrobatically tipped it over.

Gosling and Junior Stanislas then squandered two further chances within the space of a minute as Bournemouth continued their relentless search for an equaliser.

Eddie Howe introduced attackers Lee Tomlin, Yann Kermorgant and Tokelo Rantie from the bench but the chances dried up for the home side, and it was Newcastle who went close to adding a second late on when the excellent Coloccini headed over from a free-kick.
