F1 to abandon new qualifying format

Formula 1’s new elimination style qualifying looks set to be a short-lived experiment after team bosses agreed to abandon the format.
Saturday’s qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix saw the first run of the elimination format, and it was met with widespread criticism, with the final five minutes of qualifying failing to provide any action.
F1 bosses have now acted quickly and decisively on the matter.
“We wanted to improve the show and we went in the wrong direction,” said Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff. “It shows there is common sense in F1.”
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner added: “It was done with the best intentions, to try to shuffle the grid around and create more excitement and to help the promoters. and unfortunately that didn’t happen. We gave it a go. The responsible thing has happened, the teams collectively have agreed it didn’t work and to go back with immediate effect.”
The previous system will be re-introduced for the Bahrain Grand Prix on April 1-3.
