Fernley keeping a keen eye on McLaren and STR

Force India deputy team principal Bob Fernley has expressed his concern at McLaren and Toro Rosso as they are their main competitors for their targeted fifth place on the Constructors’ Championship table.

Already fifth on the Championship, 10 points ahead of Toro Rosso and 18 points ahead of McLaren, Fernley believes that it is getting tougher to fend them off as they have been progressing fast as the season progresses.

On McLaren, the deputy team principal thinks that Force India will probably finish above them but refused to rule them out of the race for fifth.

“I think they’ve got a little way to go,” he said.

“From a performance point of view there’s probably not in it from the chassis but I think we’ve got the better engine at the moment and it will get tougher as they improve. And you would expect it to be so.”

However, in contrast McLaren, Fernley thinks their main rival behind them is Toro Rosso, as their Ferrari powered car has been pushing them all season.

“I think Toro Rosso are still the ones we need to watch,” he continued.

“With the Ferrari that’s still not a bad power unit and they’ve got a good chassis. I think we’ve got to keep an eye on Toro Rosso, that’s the threat from behind.”
