FP1: Hulkenberg quickest at slippery Sochi

A diesel spillage that marshals tried to wash away with water resulted in a delayed start to FP1 in Russia, an extremely slippery track and a P1 for Nico Hulkenberg.

Although FP1 began on time it did so without any drivers on the track due to a diesel spillage from a sweeper truck at Turn 8. As the marshals tried to wash away the spillage, the drivers sat in their garages with Race Control having announced that there’d be no running for the first 30 minutes.

Once the drivers were cleared to run – with a lot of “track slippery” notices up for the teams – they headed out for installation laps on the intermediate tyres with Sebastian Vettel stating “what a mess” as he went through the spillage.

As such it took a while before anyone went out for some serious running with Fernando Alonso the first driver on the soft tyres and the first on the timesheet. But it wasn’t until the final 20 minutes that most of the field ventured out.

Slipping and sliding their way around the Sochi Autodrom, several drivers had offs but all managed to avoid the barriers. Lewis Hamilton even managed to avoid Felipe Massa as the Williams driver spun right in front of him. Hamilton spun later in his lap.

The session ended with Hulkenberg quickest of all on a 1:44.355 while Nico Rosberg was second, 0.052s down. Sebastian Vettel finished third ahead of Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz.
