FP3: Hamilton claims practice hat-trick

Date published: April 11 2015

Lewis Hamilton once again had it all his own way in final practice at Shanghai, easily outpacing his team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Fastest on the medium tyres early in the session, Hamilton again edged his team-mate when the field swapped to the soft tyres in the final 20 minutes.

Rosberg was the first of the Mercedes duo to make the change and went comfortably up on the chasing pack with a 1:37.841.

That, though, was topped by Hamilton minutes later as his 1:37.615 put him 0.226s up – and that is despite losing two-tenths in the final sector.

Hamilton's practice, though, wasn't all smooth sailing as he required a seat change having informed Mercedes that it was "getting too hot" in his cockpit.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen signalled their climb into the 'best of the rest' slot as they were 0.698 and 0.897s off the pace. The duo, though, never looked as if they could challenge Mercedes on the soft tyres.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat were fifth and sixth although the latter complained of brake problems.

Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas completed the top eight.

It was a disappointing session for Fernando Alonso who managed just two corners before his MP4-30 ground to a halt on the approach to Turn 3.

A suspected engine failure meant he did not venture out again in FP3 while team-mate Jenson Button was only 15th quickest.
