Haas F1 team driver Esteban Gutierrez is managing expectations ahead of what will be an important season for him and his new team.
The Mexican driver will compete alongside Romain Grosjean in 2016 and some have suggested this team could make some tremendous strides during the campaign. Naturally, Gutierrez and his team want to be competitive but at this juncture tremendous emphasis is being placed on just ensuring that the fundamentals are thoroughly addressed in the pre-season.
"That is our target, from the beginning. We want to be there," Gutierrez told USA Today.
"Obviously, we want to be careful on our expectations. We're working hard to be prepared with the best car possible, but we will not know until the first test," added Gutierrez.
The Mexican is satisfied with the level of preparation thus far and thinks that the team is certainly heading in the right direction. The objective will be to try and build on that as the year progresses.
"From the perspective of being a new team, (points) is an ambitious challenge. But we're here to compete. I think we have done things pretty well so far from team preparation and we want to target that," he said.
