Lewis Hamilton got one over Sebastian Vettel as he beat the German’s time by a full second in Top Gear’s ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’.

Hamilton made his first appearance on the Top Gear show six years ago when he clocked a 1:44.7 on the wet track at the Dunsfold Airfield.

This time, though, the conditions were perfect for the Mercedes driver.

Driving a Suzuki Liana, Hamilton posted a 1:42.9 to beat Vettel’s 1:44.0.

“I’m really surprised. I was going to be disappointed in myself if I didn’t do a competitive time,” Hamilton said.

As to be expected, the 28-year-old was also questioned about his decision to swap McLaren for Mercedes.

“It is a big change but I am really excited about it,” he said.

“Everyone has criticised it but I have been at McLaren since I was 13. I wanted a change and I’m a risk taker.”
