Rather than be dejected as his pole run came to an end, Lewis Hamilton has congratulated Nico Rosberg for his success in Bahrain.

Hamilton headed into Saturday night’s qualifying as the driver to beat having set the pace in all three practice sessions.

However, it was his Mercedes team-mate Rosberg who was triumphant.

The German clocked a 1:33.185 to edge Hamilton by 0.279s while the Brit’s second attempt came to naught when he made a mistake and backed off.

But rather than get down about it, Hamilton was “proud” to see Mercedes emerge as the strongest team.

Asked if he was disappointed, he said: “Nah, to be honest I’m not, you can’t always get it right.

“Congratulations to Nico. He has done a great job this weekend, he’s been improving and picking up his pace. He had a really good lap in the end there.

“I made a mistake on my last lap, I locked up and went straight on.

“But generally I really am happy.

“I’m really proud of the team; for us to continue to keep moving forward and progressing as we are.”

The 2008 World Champion was questioned about fuel consumption at the Sakhir circuit but downplayed the issue.

“It’s no worse than it has been in the past I don’t think,” he said.

“There is a lot of emphasis put on it but I think we should be fine tomorrow.”
