Nick Heidfeld has made it clear that Renault are not only eager to stay ahead of the likes of Ferrari and Mercedes, but they “want to go to the top”.

After a couple of seasons in the doldrums, Renault bounced back last year as Robert Kubica claimed three podiums. They carried the good form over to this season as Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld claimed third-place finishes in Australia and Malaysia respectively.

Heidfeld, who is driving in place of the injured Kubica, hopes the team will continue to develop the car at a rapid rate for the remainder of the season so that they can stay in front of Ferrari and also challenge the likes of McLaren and Red Bull.

“We are working very hard,” he told the team’s website. “The team has made big improvements over the last one-and-a-half years, and if we can keep that development speed up, we can maintain the early-season momentum.

“It’s certainly not going to be easy because we are competing with the likes of Ferrari now, who we will definitely try to beat. Mercedes seems to have improved, and McLaren and Red Bull are still ahead, but the team’s ambitions and targets are clear – we want to go to the top.”
