Heikki Kovalainen has downplayed Mike Gascoyne’s recent criticism, revealing he’s still in the running for a Caterham drive.
Kovalainen, despite putting in some solid performances for the backmarker team, was left without a race-seat after last year’s Championship.
According to Gascoyne, the Caterham Group’s technical officer, Kovalainen had only himself and his management to blame as he “should have shown more respect.”
The Rottweiler’s comments hinted at the end of any chance Kovalainen had of retaining his Caterham seat. However, the Finn says there is still hope.
“I have always gotten on well with Mike and I do not believe this will cause a problem with him,” the 31-year-old told MTV3.
“Mike is a professional and he and I have worked together for a few years.
“The fact is I am not negotiating wiht Mike Gascoyne. I talk to Tony Fernandes and Cyril Abiteboul.
“Currently the negotiations are continuing and I am not thinking about anything other than Formula One. First, let’s finish playing the game until the end.”
