Italian GP could continue past 2016

With its future in the balance, Bernie Ecclestone is considering a proposal that could see the Italian Grand Prix continuing beyond 2016.

Currently held at Monza, negotiations for a contract extension have recently broken down as the famed circuit struggles to raise the cash wanted by Ecclestone and Formula One Management.

Ecclestone has suggested that a solution might yet be found.

"Imola is proposing to alternate with Monza,” he told Gazetta Dello Sport.

Imola was once a regular on the grand prix circuit, hosting the San Marino Grand Prix. This race was last run in 2006.

The Forumla 1 supremo wants the historic race to continue and believes a shared venue solution could well be the answer.

“We could do that. I want to ensure Italy stays on the calendar.”
