Jacques Villeneuve expects Fernando Alonso will fight back this season, however, the title already belongs to Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel has claimed six victories from eight races this season, dropping just 14 points on his way to a massive lead 77-point lead in the Drivers’ Championship.

In fact, his advantage is so big that the German could skip the next three grands prix and still lead the standings when F1 arrives in Spa at the end of August.

In sharp contrast, Alonso has yet to claim a single victory, has just three podium results and only 87 points.

However, Villeneuve, the 1997 F1 World Champ, expects the Ferrari driver will fight back as the season progresses.

“He’s a hard worker and very stubborn,” Villeneuve told Europa Press.

“You could see that he has special qualities. Flavio Briatore said from the beginning that he is an exceptional driver, and we’ve seen that over the years.”

But while Villeneuve reckons Alonso will continue to fight, he believes the title already belongs to Vettel.

“This year definitely Vettel is the favourite. He’s going to win easily, unless he does something stupid.”
