Maldonado rues lost ‘big chance’

Crashing his E22 on the weekend when Lotus finally showed pace and reliability, Pastor Maldonado was left to lament a lost opportunity.

Just minutes into Saturday’s qualifying in Spain, the Venezuelan driver lost the car on the kerbs at the exit of Turn Three.

The car spun across the track, hitting the barrier on the other side and suffered front end damage.

“I had a big chance of doing well in the session but unfortunately I lost the car with big snap oversteer in the exit of the corner in Turn 3,” he explained.

“We need to have a look at what happened and work to get ready for tomorrow.”

The crash was made even worse by the fact that Maldonado’s team-mate Romain Grosjean went on to qualify in fifth place.

Maldonado added: “We were quite competitive today in terms of pace and kept improving throughout the weekend.

“With tyres available for the race we can work on the strategy and hopefully recover places on Sunday.”
