Mercedes Profile

Built off the back of Ross Brawn’s 2009 Championship-winning Brawn GP team, Mercedes have yet to reach their true potential.
Debut: 1954 French Grand Prix
Drivers’ titles: 2
Constructors’ titles: 0
Although the Mercedes stable has two Drivers’ titles to its name, 1954 and 1955, today’s F1 team has little in common with the outfit of yesteryear.
In fact, this team’s origins rest with BAR, Honda and Brawn GP.
Mercedes purchases the latter in 2010 on the back of a Championship-winning season but struggled to maintain that form.
The first race win came three years later when Nico Rosberg took the chequered flag in Malaysia on the way to fifth in the Constructors’ Championship while in 2013 there were three wins, two for Rosberg and one for Lewis Hamilton, as Mercedes rose to second.
However, the team – which many predict will have an engine advantage in the new 1.6-litre V6 era – will need a sustained period of victories to even stand a chance of wrestling the titles away from Red Bull in 2014.
