Sam Michael has officially started his tenure as McLaren’s sporting director after being cleared to take over the role by Williams, according to a report.

The Australian, who announced earlier this year that he would step down as Williams’ technical director after the season, confirmed in September that he would take up the post at McLaren.

Under the terms of his original contract he was only due to start his new job in March 2012, but talks between Williams and McLaren paved the way for him to take up the post on November 1.

According to Autosport, Michael ‘began duties at the factory on Tuesday and will now travel to the Abu Dhabi and Brazilian Grands Prix with the Woking-based outfit’.
