Stepping up from Manor to Force India this season, Esteban Ocon reckons a promotion to Mercedes is the “logical way” forward.
Although the Frenchman began the 2016 season as a Renault test driver, taking part in a few Friday practice sessions, he concluded it as a Manor race driver.
His stint with Manor proved to be brief with Force India confirming the Mercedes protege for the 2017 championship.
Ocon reckons it is now only “logical” that he will one day step up to Mercedes.
Asked if he was ready right now to take a Mercedes seat, he told Sky Sports News HQ: “I don’t really know about this but for sure it’s the logical way – Mercedes want to prepare us for the future.
“At the moment I really want to focus here on Force India, you never know what the future brings.”
Ocon is eagerly anticipating his debut campaign with the Mercedes-powered Force India team, saying it is like joining a “family” and one with which he hopes to win his first grand prix in 2017.
“It’s a very small team so it feels really like a family. The atmosphere is great between the people, everyone is getting along well and they also welcome me very well in the team.
“On the other side they are also very motivated, everyone works with passion and they really want to bring the best car for us to have on track.
“It’s definitely my target to at some point win a grand prix. First, I need to learn a lot during winter testing and the preparation here to be ready for the first race but after that, for sure, I want to win a grand prix. I’m not here just to participate!”
