Renault eye Perez to replace Palmer – report

Renault are reportedly in discussions with Force India's Sergio Perez to replace Jolyon Palmer next season, according to L'Equipe.

The Brit is already battling to save his place on the grid for 2018 after a dismal start to the season which has been highlighted by the impressive form of Nico Hulkenberg who arrived in the off-season.

And Hulkenberg could be lining up alongside his former Force India team-mate if the Enstone-based team are able to prise the Mexican away.

However, Perez, currently seventh in the World Drivers' Championship, is highly thought of by the Force India outfit and he himself may be tempted to wait should Ferrari and Kimi Raikkonen part ways at the end of the current campaign.

But, it looks increasingly likely that there will be an opportunity at Renault – who are trying to build their way up to title contenders again – as team boss Cyril Abiteboul cranked up the pressure on struggling Palmer.

"We all need to have results," said Abiteboul.

"Nico shows that the car is able to score points, and Jolyon must also contribute. We are extremely supportive and there is no plan, but we are in an ultra-competitive environment and everyone has the pressure of results.

"For now we give ourselves time to analyse the situation," he added.
